Yahoo Mail attachment size limit: 25 MB, and how to send the file anyway

Yahoo caps all attachments in one message at 25 MB, incoming and outgoing. Checked on 9 October 2026: why a 20 MB file still bounces, and the method that always works.

The short answer. Yahoo Mail caps all attachments in one message at 25 MB — outgoing and incoming alike. It is not 25 MB per file: two 15 MB files will not go together.

And because a message is rewritten before it leaves, aim for 18 MB at most on disk. Above that there is no setting to change: you send a link instead of the file.

“must not exceed 25MB in total file size”

That is the wording on Yahoo's own help page about message size limits, checked on 9 October 2026:

The total size of all files attached to a single message, incoming or outgoing, must not exceed 25MB in total file size.

Two words matter. “Total”: the limit applies to the sum, not to each file. “Incoming or outgoing”: it also blocks you when someone sends you something too heavy — and in that case you often see nothing arrive at all.

What fits in 25 MB, and what does not

The photo sizes below come from the camera maker's own manual, read the same day: a 45 megapixel body is rated at 47.6 MB per RAW frame and 13.0 MB per full-quality JPEG.

Why a 20 MB file is refused by a 25 MB limit

Email carries text and nothing else. Your file is therefore rewritten as printable characters before it leaves — that is base64 encoding, three bytes written as four characters. The file grows by roughly 33 % in transit. A 20 MB file weighs close to 27 MB inside the message: refused.

Two more things pile on. Your text, inline images and signature count against the same limit. And above all, the lower of the two limits wins: yours when sending, the receiving server's on arrival. Corporate servers often stop at 10 MB.

What Yahoo offers instead, and what it costs

In the compose window, Yahoo offers to attach a file from Google Drive or Dropbox rather than attaching it directly: the message then carries a sharing link. Good idea, with three consequences.

  1. You need a third-party account, and the file lands in a quota shared with everything else you store.
  2. The recipient may hit an access request to approve by hand. The file has left; it has not arrived.
  3. The link lives as long as you keep the file — no longer, no shorter, and with no deletion date on display.

Zipping saves nothing: RAW files, JPEGs and video are already compressed. A ZIP of 47 MB of RAW will weigh about 45.

Sending the file without fighting Yahoo

The method that works at any size is always the same: you don't send the file, you send its address. The Yahoo message goes back to what it is good at — a few lines of text and a link.

toobigtoshare takes up to 2 TB per transfer. Upload the file, get a link, paste it into your Yahoo message. The other person clicks and downloads: no account to create, for you or for them, and no email address is asked for — neither yours nor theirs.

The file is deleted after 3 days, on a date and time shown in advance. And if your connection drops mid-upload, it resumes where it stopped instead of starting over. $5.49 per transfer, no subscription.

Send the file with toobigtoshare — up to 2 TB, no account, one link to paste into Yahoo Mail.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum attachment size on Yahoo Mail?

25 MB for all files attached to one message, outgoing and incoming, according to Yahoo's help page checked on 9 October 2026. It is not a per-file limit: several small files add up.

Why is my 20 MB file refused by Yahoo?

Because the limit applies to the encoded message, not to the file on your disk. Encoding adds about a third to the weight, and your text and signature count inside the same limit. Aim for 18 MB at most on disk.

How do I send a file larger than 25 MB with Yahoo Mail?

By sending a link instead of the file. Yahoo offers Google Drive or Dropbox from the compose window, which assumes an account on your side. toobigtoshare accepts up to 2 TB with no account on either side, and the link pastes straight into the message.

Does Yahoo Mail Plus raise the limit?

Yahoo's help page on message size limits gives 25 MB without distinguishing between plans. Before paying for that reason, check the figure on the plan's own page: this is the kind of limit that changes without notice.
